We were just boys at that time, teen-agers who ardently wanted to be priests . . .As was common practice in the 1940s, candidates for the priesthood were sought in Catholic grade schools and those young teenagers who felt called went off to a Preparatory Seminary and were introduced to a formation that profoundly transformed their lives. Their training was rigorous, but kind and gentle.

86. In the Wheat ~
How could we
with all our boyish energy
be so allured
by tranquility
were it not
for You
Whom we found
one day
like a fawn
lying in the wheat—
and on the spot
we pledged to adopt
and keep You
in a hidden solitude.
~
Wie konnten wir
Jungens voll Energie
so verlockt werden
hinweg in die Stille
außer von Dir veranlaßt
daß wir Dich eines Tages fanden
wie ein Kitz
mitten im einem Weizenfeld liegend
und dort auf der Stelle
beschloßen wir
Dich zu adoptieren und
und für Dich zu sorgen
in einer abgeschiedenen Versteck.

You seem to have reached a climax here. Beautiful.
