We were just boys at that time, teen-agers who ardently wanted to be priests . . .As was common practice in the 1940s, candidates for the priesthood were sought in Catholic grade schools and those young teenagers who felt called went off to a Preparatory Seminary and were introduced to a formation that profoundly transformed their lives. Their training was rigorous, but kind and gentle.

59. The Newness of God ~
Every thing spoke to us
about You
in a fresh
and pristine way
and even we saw
that You were new
like each dawning day,
and we felt
You wore
the musty clothes
they had You wear
unwillingly.
~
Jedes Ding
sprach zu uns
von Dir
und zwar frisch
und in purer Weise
und sogar wir merkten
daß Du so neu warst
wie jeder dämmernde Tag es war
und wir fingen an zu denken
daß Du
die muffigen Kleider
die Du an hast
widerwillig trägst.
