We were just boys at that time, teen-agers who ardently wanted to be priests . . .As was common practice in the 1940s, candidates for the priesthood were sought in Catholic grade schools and those young teenagers who felt called went off to a Preparatory Seminary and were introduced to a formation that profoundly transformed their lives. Their training was rigorous, but kind and gentle.

60. Newness ~
You were not someone
we learned to imagine
from superb creations
we had grown up with
like Chartres
or Cologne,
and the paintings
hadn't reached us yet—
no, we experienced You
new
like birds do
or the walled-in girl
of Lisieux.
~
Du warst nicht jemand
den wir uns vorzustellen lernten
von den prächtigen Schöfungen
mit denen wir aufgewachsen waren
so wie Chartres oder Köln,
und die Gemälde
hatten uns noch nicht erreicht.
Nein, wir erfuhren Dich neu
wie die Vögel es tun
oder das eingemauerte
Mädchen von Lisieux.
