We were just boys at that time, teen-agers who ardently wanted to be priests . . .As was common practice in the 1940s, candidates for the priesthood were sought in Catholic grade schools and those young teenagers who felt called went off to a Preparatory Seminary and were introduced to a formation that profoundly transformed their lives. Their training was rigorous, but kind and gentle.

20. Learning Languages ~
How we learned
the countless columns
of words
in Latin, French
and Greek
stacking them
to reach You with,
we masons in Babel,
til they fell down
around us
and we,
with dusty tongues
sat speechless
on our smoking
hills of rubble.
~
Wie wir die unzähligen Spalten
von Vokabeln
in Französisch, Griechisch
und Latein lernten
und stapelten
sie hoch zu Dir hin
wir Maurer es
in Babel taten
bis sie niederstürzten
um uns her
und wir saßen sprachlos da
mit staubigen Zungen
auf unseren Bergen
von Schotter.
