We were just boys at that time, teen-agers who ardently wanted to be priests . . .As was common practice in the 1940s, candidates for the priesthood were sought in Catholic grade schools and those young teenagers who felt called went off to a Preparatory Seminary and were introduced to a formation that profoundly transformed their lives. Their training was rigorous, but kind and gentle.

94. Seeing You Everywhere ~
Once
I fell in love
with a tree
I could see
on a distant field
outside the cloister wall.
In summer
it stood alone
in the wheat
but in winter
it would lean away
from me,
modestly.
~
Einmal verliebte ich mich
in einen Baum
den ich auf einem fernen Acker sah
jenseits der Klostermauer.
Im Sommer stand er alleine da
aber im Winter
lehnte er sich sittsam
von mir zurück.
