We were just boys at that time, teen-agers who ardently wanted to be priests . . .As was common practice in the 1940s, candidates for the priesthood were sought in Catholic grade schools and those young teenagers who felt called went off to a Preparatory Seminary and were introduced to a formation that profoundly transformed their lives. Their training was rigorous, but kind and gentle.

65. Confession ~
You made us proud
to be ourselves
and when admonished
to confess
our sins
to appease You
we asked
sincerely:
had we ever done
anything
to displease You?
~
Du machtest uns stolz
so zu sein wie wir waren
und als wir ermahnt wurden
unsere Sünden zu beichten
um Deine Gnade zu erlangen
fragten wir uns ehrlich
ob wir jemals etwas getan hatten
um Dir zu mißfallen.
