We were just boys at that time, teen-agers who ardently wanted to be priests . . .As was common practice in the 1940s, candidates for the priesthood were sought in Catholic grade schools and those young teenagers who felt called went off to a Preparatory Seminary and were introduced to a formation that profoundly transformed their lives. Their training was rigorous, but kind and gentle.

55. Wooing ~
They were careful
to make us aware
of tradition
but You gave us
our own intuition
and we,
in our simplicity,
wooed You
with dogged, boyish
ineptitude.
~
Sie waren sorgfältig darauf bedacht
uns der Tradition bewußt zu machen
aber Du gabst uns
unsere eigene Intuition
und wir
in unserer Einfalt
warben um Dich
mit unserer verbissener knabenhafter
Ungeschicklichkeit.
