We were just boys at that time, teen-agers who ardently wanted to be priests . . .As was common practice in the 1940s, candidates for the priesthood were sought in Catholic grade schools and those young teenagers who felt called went off to a Preparatory Seminary and were introduced to a formation that profoundly transformed their lives. Their training was rigorous, but kind and gentle.

31. Grace before Meals ~
Now I know
You were moved
when hungry boys
stood patiently
at tables
with folded arms
waiting
to say their
distracted grace
hastily.
~
Jetzt weiß ich
daß Du berührt warst
als wir hungrige Knaben
geduldig vor den Tischen standen
mit verschränkten Armen
darauf wartend,
unser zerstreutes Tischgebet
hastig zu sprechen.
