We were just boys at that time, teen-agers who ardently wanted to be priests . . .As was common practice in the 1940s, candidates for the priesthood were sought in Catholic grade schools and those young teenagers who felt called went off to a Preparatory Seminary and were introduced to a formation that profoundly transformed their lives. Their training was rigorous, but kind and gentle.

63. Mercy ~
You were never mean
with us—
other rules
governed
than those
of harshness.
When we thought
You might punish us
You never did,
and tears
welled up
at feeling
what gentleness was.
~
Du warst niemals böse zu uns
andere Gesetze galten
als die der Strenge.
Als wir dachten
Du könntest uns bestrafen
tatest Du es nicht
und Tränen quollen hervor
da wir fühlten
was Güte war.
