We were just boys at that time, teen-agers who ardently wanted to be priests . . .As was common practice in the 1940s, candidates for the priesthood were sought in Catholic grade schools and those young teenagers who felt called went off to a Preparatory Seminary and were introduced to a formation that profoundly transformed their lives. Their training was rigorous, but kind and gentle.

22. What Really Mattered~
We read the books
of silence
and nothingness
and began to understand
things
that stirred in them
like longing
and fire,
and threw
the other books
away.
~
Wir lasen die Bücher
über das Schweigen
und über das Nichts
und begannen Dinge
die in ihnen standen
wie Sehnsucht und Feuer
zu verstehen
und warfen
die anderen Bücher weg.
