We were just boys at that time, teen-agers who ardently wanted to be priests . . .As was common practice in the 1940s, candidates for the priesthood were sought in Catholic grade schools and those young teenagers who felt called went off to a Preparatory Seminary and were introduced to a formation that profoundly transformed their lives. Their training was rigorous, but kind and gentle.

10. Posture ~
We were taught
to walk slowly
and sit erect
with hands
resting lightly
on our thighs
just behind
the knees,
and not one of us
ever thought
of asking
why that
had to be.
~
Wir wurden belehrt
langsam zu gehen
und aufrecht zu sitzen
mit Händen, die leicht ruhten
gerade oberhalb des Kries
und nicht einer von uns
stellte das in Frage
oder fragte wieso.
