We were just boys at that time, teen-agers who ardently wanted to be priests . . .As was common practice in the 1940s, candidates for the priesthood were sought in Catholic grade schools and those young teenagers who felt called went off to a Preparatory Seminary and were introduced to a formation that profoundly transformed their lives. Their training was rigorous, but kind and gentle.

4. Neophyte ~
You brought us together
from America's sidewalks
with our calloused hands
and scuffed knees
and we felt
forlorn
and ill at ease
in jackets
and ties,
and no one mentioned
our bicycles
left behind
or our saddened dogs.
~4.
Du brachtest uns zusammen
von den Strassen Amerikas
mit unseren schwieligen Händen
und aufgestoßenen Knien,
und wir fühlten uns verlassen
und unbehaglich
in Jacken und Krawatten,
und niemand erwähnte
die Fahrräder,
die wir zurückgelassen hatten
oder unsere traurende Hunde.
