We were just boys at that time, teen-agers who ardently wanted to be priests . . .As was common practice in the 1940s, candidates for the priesthood were sought in Catholic grade schools and those young teenagers who felt called went off to a Preparatory Seminary and were introduced to a formation that profoundly transformed their lives. Their training was rigorous, but kind and gentle.

7. Piety ~
You were so overwhelming
for boys
that we lost interest
in rhetoric, algebra
and Greek
and would rather
have fled
to darkened chapels
to dance
in panting prayer
around Your altars,
like minstrels, clowns
or troubadours.
~
Du warst so überwältigend
für uns Jungen,
dass wir Interesse
für Algebra und Griechisch verloren
und lieber
zu dunklen Kapellen geflohen wären
um dort mit hechelnden Gebeten
um Deine Altäre zu tanzen,
wie Spielleute,
Clowns oder Troubadoure.
