We were just boys at that time, teen-agers who ardently wanted to be priests . . .As was common practice in the 1940s, candidates for the priesthood were sought in Catholic grade schools and those young teenagers who felt called went off to a Preparatory Seminary and were introduced to a formation that profoundly transformed their lives. Their training was rigorous, but kind and gentle.

12. Seduction ~
We were told to live in silence
like seeds have in soil
that we might one day
break through and flower,
but we preferred
the space of chapels
where fragrance breathed
from linen and wood,
where You lured us
with faint remnants
of liturgies long since performed,
so it was there we lingered—
and forgot about the flowering.
~
Sie erzählten uns
wir sollten in Schweigen leben
wie Samen es taten in Erderäumen
so daß wir eines Tages durchbrechen
und blühen konnten,
aber wir zogen den Raum
Deiner Kapelle vor
wo wir Wohlgerüche
von Leinen und Holz atmeten
und wurden dabei hineingelockt
zu tieferen Räumen
durch die Farben der Stille —
und wir vergaßen darüber
das andere Blühen allesamt.
