We were just boys at that time, teen-agers who ardently wanted to be priests . . .As was common practice in the 1940s, candidates for the priesthood were sought in Catholic grade schools and those young teenagers who felt called went off to a Preparatory Seminary and were introduced to a formation that profoundly transformed their lives. Their training was rigorous, but kind and gentle.

41. Rituals ~
Our hours passedof unchanging ritual
attuning us
to rhythms
on schedules
distant and regular
like the tides
or the arching
of the sun
above our scorched
window sills.
~
Unsere Stunden liefen planmäßig
nach unveränderlichen Ritualien
die uns
mit gleichmäßigen Rhythmen
des Großen Alls hielten
wie die der Gezeiten
oder das Hinübergleiten der Sonne
über unsere versengten Fenstersims.
