We were just boys at that time, teen-agers who ardently wanted to be priests . . .As was common practice in the 1940s, candidates for the priesthood were sought in Catholic grade schools and those young teenagers who felt called went off to a Preparatory Seminary and were introduced to a formation that profoundly transformed their lives. Their training was rigorous, but kind and gentle.

14. How We Prayed ~
We had to speak
to You
from black prayer books
thumbmarked with use
but secretly
pursued
other wordless ways
like kneeling
without moving
or sitting
with hand to head
musing
or watching
a stained glass
window kindle
with morning light.
~
Wir mußten zu dir sprechen
aus schwarzen Gebetbüchern
vom Gebrauch gebräunt
mit Daumenabdrücken
aber heimlich entdeckten
andere wortlose Wege
wie Knien ohne Bewegung
oder Sitzen
mit dem Kopf in Händen
ganz in Gedanken versunken
oder schauten dahin
wie ein buntes Fenster
im Morgenlicht
zu glühen begann.
