We were just boys at that time, teen-agers who ardently wanted to be priests . . .As was common practice in the 1940s, candidates for the priesthood were sought in Catholic grade schools and those young teenagers who felt called went off to a Preparatory Seminary and were introduced to a formation that profoundly transformed their lives. Their training was rigorous, but kind and gentle.

2. Vocation ~
One thing
we knew
was this:
to be
with You
we had to
leave cities
and change.
So one hundred
and twenty came
in black
and vied
with one another
to see
who could serve
You best.

2. Berufung
Eines wußten wir:
Um mit Dir zu sein
mußten wir weg von der Stadt
und uns verändern.
So kamen wir—
einhundertundzwanzig von uns
in Schwarz gekleidet
und wetteiferten miteinander,
um zu sehen,
wer von uns
Dir am besten
dienen konnte.
