We were just boys at that time, teen-agers who ardently wanted to be priests . . .As was common practice in the 1940s, candidates for the priesthood were sought in Catholic grade schools and those young teenagers who felt called went off to a Preparatory Seminary and were introduced to a formation that profoundly transformed their lives. Their training was rigorous, but kind and gentle.

3. To the Indiana Heartland ~
On the way
I saw Ohioan
cathedrals
of silos
and trees
and orderly homes
on farms
like churches,
and You standing out there
in the middle
of the harvest.

3. Unterwegs nach Indiana
Auf dem Weg dahin
sah ich Kathedralen in Ohio—
Silos und Bäume sie waren
und gepflegte Bauernhäuser
wie Kirchen,
und Dich
draussen in den Feldern stehend
immitten der Ernte.
