We were just boys at that time, teen-agers who ardently wanted to be priests . . .As was common practice in the 1940s, candidates for the priesthood were sought in Catholic grade schools and those young teenagers who felt called went off to a Preparatory Seminary and were introduced to a formation that profoundly transformed their lives. Their training was rigorous, but kind and gentle.

17. Studying Latin ~
We knew
You expected from us
Latin
and we studied it
to make
our tongues
say those words
You wanted,
but sulked
that Cicero
was given
all that attention
in Your stead.
~
Wir wußten daß Du
Latein von uns erwartetest
und wir lernten es
um unsere Zungen fähig zu machen
jene Worte zu sagen
die Du wolltest
aber es verdroß uns
daß Cicero
all die Aufmerksamkeit bekam
anstatt Dir.
